Gummy Bears

Sometimes, it feels good to step away from the traditional chocolates and chew on something different, preferably which is also sweet. If this sweet is also nostalgic, then there is nothing like it. The Gummy Bear series of candy has been around for quite some time now. The gummy bear candy was first invented in the 1920s by Hans Riegel and America saw its first gummy candy in 1982, which was manufactured by the German candy company Haribo, the candy has gained popularity ever since.

The basic ingredient in the Gummy Bear we have today is edible gelatin, the same gelatin which is also found in soft marshmallow, certain jellies, soft caramel, licorice, foam filled wafers, wine gums, chocolate coated mallows, pastilles and a host of other sweets, which make the candy rather elastic, giving it the chewy effect that is desired. This also helps the sweet, maintain a higher preservation period on the shelf. The usage of gelatin goes back right to the time of the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt.

To outline the process that goes into the making of Gummy Bears, it is worth to mention that they are made from a mixture of corn syrup, corn starch, gelatin, sugar, flavor and color. Right portion of ingredients are measured and mixed, theses are then filled into a special candy cooking machine. The mixture is pushed through a very long heated coil, which is heated on the outside by steam. The gummy is then pumped after being cooked into a vacuum chamber to rid the gummy of excess moisture. It is then moved from the vacuum chamber to a mixing station and it is here that the flavors, colors, acids with fruit concentrates are all mixed in the gummy mass. The next thing that happens is the gummy mass is pumped into moulds boards filled with starch, which helps in shaping the Gummy Bears. After the curing is carried out, the gummy is now formed out as Gummy Bears. These are then packaged for delivery and sold.

So, if you want to bite into something gooey, something in the form of a cute animal, then you need to get back to your old favorite i.e. Gummy Bears.
